New Year partygoers advised to don masks
MODERATE pollution is expected this morning, but it might get better in the afternoon, the city’s environmental monitoring center said yesterday.
People who plan to spend New Year’s Eve outdoors should wear face masks to protect themselves against the smog, it said.
Tomorrow should be better as wind is expected to blow in from the south and this should disperse most of the pollutants, but the bad air will return at the weekend.
The weather will also be a little cooler today, with a high of 9 degrees Celsius and a low of 5.
Tomorrow and the weekend will be warmer, with the daily highs likely to be in the region of 12 or 13 degrees.
Today and tomorrow will be cloudy, but dry, though drizzles are set to arrive over the weekend, before the rain gets heavier on Monday.
The recent smog was a result of bad air being blown into the city from northern China, the environment bureau said.
As of 6pm yesterday, the air quality index stood at 165, while the density of PM2.5 particles — the main contributor to the smog — was 125 micrograms per cubic meter.
Such levels are described as “moderate” pollution in China. The “safe” level set by the World Health Organization is 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
Some construction sites were ordered to suspend work yesterday after the city’s environmental authority issued its emergency measures. Vehicles carrying construction waste were banned from the city’s roads.
