New Year’s Day runners aim for checkered flag

FORMULA 1 cars make way for thousands of runners in one of two New Year’s Day running events being held in the city.

More used to motor sport action, the Shanghai International Circuit will for the first time host a running event.

The Run the Track event at the Jiading District racing track features two races — a single lap race around the 5.4-kilometercircuit and a 12km run of four laps on a shortened circuit.

Organizers said the idea came from the informal races held in Formula One circuits in which drivers, team members and marshals compete.

And as the Shanghai International Circuit track is shaped like the Chinese character “shang” — meaning up — organizers say this carries good wishes for the new year.

Meanwhile, in the Pudong New Area, the Shanghai 2015 New Year Run features an 8km route. Competitors will run from the Oriental Pearl TV Tower to the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center on Guozhan Road.

Organizer Shanghai East Best Lansheng Event Management Company was behind last month’s Shanghai International Marathon and said the New Year Run opens a 2015 Shanghai Marathon Series of events.

Registration for Run the Track opens this weekend. Applicants, who must be aged between 18 and 65, can log on to www.runshanghai.com/baoming. The site is in Chinese.

The entrance fee for the single lap run is 60 yuan (US$9.75) and 100 yuan for the 4-lap option. Organizers say 4,000 places are available for each race.

Registration for the Shanghai 2015 New Year Run opens on December 8 and is due to remain open until December 12.

There are more than 10,000 places in three categories: individual runners, teams and couples. Entrance is 100 yuan.

The top 20 individual, team and couple entrants will automatically gain spots in the 2015 Shanghai Marathon’s 10km or 5km runs, said the organizer.

To apply, log on to www.shmarathon.com — which is in Chinese and English — or follow the official WeChat account “shanghaimarathon.”

Applications through WeChat are only open to individual runners from China’s mainland.

For the team run category, each team should consist of seven male runners and three female runners, say organizers.

A team leader should fill in the registration information for all team members and give their team a name. Couples should also apply on one booking form, added organizers.
