New book on 40 years of opening up

SHANGHAI Archives released a new book yesterday on local events and key figures during the 40 years of China’s reform and opening up.
The book includes numerous historical photos and documents from the archives. It also features stories of 56 people who experienced, or played roles, during this important process which started in 1978.
In one story, Zhao Qizheng, former head of the State Council Information Office, recalls his experiences during Pudong’s opening up in early 1990s when he served as the first director of the management committee of the Pudong New Area.
“The book reviews and records Shanghai’s rapid development and changes over the last four decades,” said Zhou Weizhong, the curator of the archives and chief editor of the book.
Other stories look at the first publicly-traded stocks sold on the Chinese mainland, the construction of the mainland’s first highway, the World Expo 2010, the Shanghai Disney Resort as well as the development of C919, China’s first locally developed long-haul airliner.
The book’s personal stories are based on interviews conducted by dozens of local journalists. Many of the older contributors to the book reported on events in the reform and opening up process as they happened, said Xiao Lin, an official with the archives.
