A NEW, less invasive gastric surgery was conducted for the first time in China in Shanghai General Hospital over the weekend.
It is cheaper and avoids open-chest surgery. It can help people with gastricesophagitis reflux disease, or GERD, a common problem.
About 17 percent of people in the world suffer the problem, 30 percent of whom need surgery. The new ultrasonic endostaple surgery takes just an hour — much shorter than the current surgery.
