New life from tragic death
TWO people yesterday became the latest beneficiaries of a national organ donor program after receiving a kidney and a cornea from a young woman who died on Saturday, the Shanghai branch of the Red Cross Society of China said.
The donor, a 21-year-old from northeast China’s Jilin Province who was studying at Shanghai International Studies University, became the 84th person to donate their organs in the city after dying of a brain hemorrhage.
The transplants were carried out at the Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital, and while no details of the recipients were released, officials said they are recovering well.
The national organ donation system, which is operated by the Red Cross Society of China, began as pilot scheme in March 2010 before being rolled out across the country in February 2013.
