New pump station built to keep floodwaters back

A new pump station was put into operation yesterday at a former river port in Hongkou District to protect the vulnerable area from rising waters during flood season, said the Shanghai Water Authority.

The Hongkou Dock pump and dam station project is designed to prevent low-lying residential areas along the Hongkougang River from being inundated during what is expected to be the most severe flood season in two decades, said an official.

The season started last Wednesday and will continue for three months, with high tides, rainstorms and typhoons besetting the city. Shanghai’s weather authority said the city should brace for three times the usual amount of precipitation. During rainstorms or typhoons, the dam gate at the station can be closed within five minutes to hold back flooding, while three new pumps will channel water rising in the port to the Huangpu River, said Zhu Yongsheng, a district government official who is in charge of the project.

“Over 100,000 cubic meters of water, equaling the amount of water in 57 standard swimming pools, can be discharged into the river per hour with the pumps,” Zhu told Shanghai Daily.

“The water level at the port won’t rise to the top of the flood-prevention wall, which is what happened during the previous flood seasons.”

Furthermore, one of the pumps is able to take water from the Huangpu River and redirect it to improve the quality of the water in the Hongkougang River, he added.

A garbage collection machine has also be installed at the station to prevent floating rubbish from entering the Huangpu River, Zhu said.

Last June, the 5.5-kilometer-long river flooded nearby Liyang Road, Qiujiang Road, Sichuan Road N. and other main roads in the district during a rainstorm. Water accumulated to a level of 50 centimeters in a section of Sichuan Road N.

The Daming Road E. Bridge was also seriously threatened by rising waters. During the construction of the pump station, workers renovated the bridge, raising it to a safe height, according to the water authority.

Hongkou Dock was first built in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127).
