New rules on cab fare surcharges
FUEL surcharges on taxi fares will from next month be reviewed every six months, instead of annually, the city government said yesterday.
With effect from July 1, a surcharge of 1 yuan (16 US cents) will apply to all fares as long as the average oil price over the previous 12 months was more than 6.43 yuan per liter, it said.
If the mean price was below that benchmark, the surcharge will be lifted, it said.
In the 11 months through the end of May, the average oil price was 6.79 yuan, so the current surcharge is set to remain in place for at least the next six months.
The city’s transport commission said it decided to shorten the surcharge review period in response to complaints from local people that although oil prices had fallen 13 times since last summer, taxi fares had remained unchanged.
The current system was introduced in July 2011.
