New suburban park pledges to tackle visitor woes
A NEW suburban park in Jinshan District is having a trial run and the complaints have already started pouring in.
In response to visitor gripes about inconvenient transport facilities and sign-board shortages, the operator of Langxia Suburban Park has begun work to improve traffic and other facilities.
The first phase of the park that has been open to the public features typical countryside landscape. It has a string of sightseeing spots, including a maple tree forest, plots of farmland, pick-your-own fruit fields and countryside houses. There is also a large lawn for camping, a sweet-scented osmanthus forest, a countryside marathon track and gardens for planting fruits like grape, peach etc.
Access to most areas is free except the Langxia Ecological Garden, which charges 50 yuan (US$8). The park covers 21 square kilometers, with the first phase covering about 27 percent of the total which, to give a rough estimate, is equal to four times the size of the iconic Century Park in Pudong. The eco garden is its centerpiece and the whole project is due to be completed in 2020.
In the absence of a subway in Jinshan and the fact the park is about 80 kilometers from downtown People’s Square, it is advised that visitors drive to the destination, if possible. Not a happy thought for people who don’t own cars.
“I am very interested in the park because it is a new attraction in the city, but I don’t have a car and it is not convenient to reach the park as it is too far and there is no subway,” Chen Yanwen, a Hongkou District resident, told Shanghai Daily.
Also, the sightseeing spots inside the park are not close by, requiring several minutes of driving, and they are not easy to spot, even on the map, in the absence of signage, as visitors have found out.
“I got lost on the way because there are not enough sign boards, and I was in the area just last year!” complained Liu Bolun, a Jinshan resident and a shutterbug who drove to the maple tree forest.
The park operator is making efforts to improve conditions for visitors.
Free shuttle buses linking the Langxia Industrial Zone, the maple tree forest and the ecological garden operate on weekends. The route covers four kilometers. Another 9km route covering 11 stops will be launched soon.
