Newlyweds asked to forgo customary bangs
NEWLYWEDS are being offered free electronic firecrackers in a bid to encourage them not to set off the real thing to celebrate their nuptials, an official said yesterday.
“The offer is subject to couples signing a written pledge,” said Sun Xiaohong, deputy director of the marriage management department at the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
“It might take time for couples to change their way of thinking, but we hope the promotion will make them more aware of the new regulations on the issue,” she said.
Posters reminding brides and grooms that celebrating their marriages with firecrackers is now illegal in many parts of the city have been posted at all registration centers, she said.
The pledge the couples are asked to sign also encourages them to start their lives together by tipping off the police to any of their friends and neighbors who might have lit, stored or transported fireworks.
An unnamed fire department official said it was difficult to punish newlyweds for setting off firecrackers on their special day, as “weddings take place all across the city.”
Rachel Zhang, who registered her marriage in Hongkou District yesterday, said she would be happy to use the electronic bangers at her wedding in May.
“I’ll definitely use the e-fireworks,” she said.
“They’re eco-friendly and sound much the same as the real thing.”
As of the end of last month, 211 people had been fined for violating the restrictions on firework use, while about 30,000 boxes of illegal goods had been confiscated, police said earlier.
Meanwhile, Jinshan police said they will conduct patrols in the areas around the Shanghai Petrochemical plant, Jinshan No. 2 Industrial Zone and Caojing Town Industrial Zone over the Spring Festival to “ensure public safety.”
