Next stop jail for the car crash conman

A MAN who deliberately drove his vehicle into other cars to gain compensation has been jailed for four and half years after he was found guilty of threatening public security.

Because the man, surnamed Huang, used a car - unlike other cases in which swindlers try to get themselves knocked down - he was charged with a more serious crime since he could have injured or killed other road users, judges at the Pudong New Area People's Court said.

Threatening public security carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Between July 2008 and November 2009, Huang cheated 10 victims out of 14,000 yuan (US$2,065).

Huang, who used to be an unlicensed cabbie, watched for vehicles changing lanes or making turns and then collided with them. He knew that, according to the law such maneuvers would leave the drivers liable for accidents.

Most drivers, though they doubted they were at fault, paid up, the judges said.

But because Huang was so often a victim of traffic accidents around Pudong's Nanhui area, he came to the attention of the police.

He was caught in January.
