Night ferry to go by month’s end

THE city’s sole remaining all-night ferry service on the Huangpu River will moor for the final time later this month, its operator said yesterday, though a spokesman declined to be tied down to a specific date.

“After looking at the number of people who use the service between 10:30pm and 4am, and comparing that with our operating costs, we took the decision to discontinue it,” said Xu Chunjie, operations manager at Shanghai Ferry Service Co, which runs the Jinding Line.

“We know the night ferry is part of the city’s public transport network, but as a private business, it also has to be financially viable,” he said.

The ferry, which links Jinqiao in the Pudong New Area to Dinghai Road on Fuxing Island has for many years provided a through-the-night service, with boats leaving every hour between 10:30pm and 4am, and every 30 minutes from 4am to 6am.

For some time, however, boats running in the early hours of the morning have been carrying “no more than one or two passengers,” Xu said.

“That’s far fewer than the 15 crew members we need to man each crossing,” he said.

Xu said the company is currently reworking its timetable, though the only decision so far reached is the cancelation of the nighttime service.

More details will follow in due course, he told Shanghai Daily.
