Nine students drowned during summer holiday
Nine young students have drowned since the start of the summer vacation, the Shanghai Education Commission said yesterday.
Most of the victims were migrant children, the youngest just a first-grader. They were drowned in ponds or rivers in different parts of the city.
On Saturday, a 16-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a river in suburban Jinshan District.
The boy, a native of southwestern Yunnan Province, went swimming with three other teenagers in Bainiu Pond in Fengjing Town.
He was heard crying out for help before he disappeared in the river, witnesses said.
Three other teenagers dived in the waters to rescue him but were unable to help.
They reported the incident to police. The boy’s body was recovered about 5:30pm.
The pond stretches more than 1,000 square meters and there are no facilities on the shore.
Since the start of the year, 14 students have drowned, according to the Youth Protection Committee under the commission. The number of students drowned in the city was 27 in 2011 and 24 in 2012, the committee said.
The number could be much higher as it excludes preschoolers and out-of-town children who visit Shanghai during the holidays.
