No relief for covered peeing man statue
A statue of a peeing male installed in Shanghai Fashion Center, Yangpu District, has been covered up and will be removed soon.
Complaints have been made about the sculpture, which depicts a man urinating toward visitors with his trousers lowered.
Shanghai Fashion Center said the statue was installed in the park as a “fun” object about three years ago from Austria. It is owned by Zotter Chocolate Theater, a chocolate company at the park.
The center said it could not move the statue yet because of safety concerns as it remained connected to electricity and water services. But it has been covered up.
The statue normally sprays water as visitors pass by, but the spraying function had stopped working, said Zhang Xin, a spokesman for the center.
Zhang added there had been no complaints about the statue until a recent online debate erupted.
“Given the concerns, we are working with the owner and maintenance workers to remove it safely soon,” he said.
