Nokia sues Shanghai firm on patent
CELLPHONE giant Nokia went to court yesterday to accuse a Shanghai-based firm of infringing its patent on a lens technology.
Nokia wants the Shanghai Huaqin Telecom Technology Co Ltd to stop producing and selling the offending products and compensate Nokia 10 million yuan (US$1.55 million) for its economic loss.
Nokia told the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court the Shanghai company manufactured and sold a phone adapted from its patented method of covering the lens when the phone is not in use.
The defendant argued that the technology was not a Nokia patent and that instead it is "existing technology."
The Shanghai firm also said the compensation demand is excessive.
Nokia argued that it calculated the compensation by using the defendant's size as one of China's top five cellphone design companies.
