Noodle shop owner jailed for poppy seeds in soup
THE operator of a noodle shop has been sentenced to seven months in prison and fined 2,000 yuan (US$310) for adding poppy seeds to her wonton soup and trading under a false name, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
The woman, named Yang, said she bought the cafe in 2013, but was struggling to make a living until she started adding the seeds to the soup a year later, which saw sales of it spike.
The use of poppy seeds in food products is illegal across China.
The court heard that the business had also been operating without a valid business license or health certificate, and had been masquerading as a branch of a “well-known,” but unnamed restaurant chain.
The defendant’s son, who was found to be complicit in the crime, was fined 1,000 yuan and given a four-month prison sentence, suspended for four months.
