Not engaged by 3-month phone plan

MOBILE phone users fed up of losing unused data allowances each month say new three-month packages from Shanghai’s three mobile operators are no solution.

Under these, users carry any unused data allowance from one month to the next within the three-month period.

Customers on monthly packages cannot carry any unused allowance forward. The Shanghai Consumer Council received complaints from them saying it was unfair to lose unused data allowance they paid for.

But the new three-month plans require users to buy much more data capacity.

China Mobile’s package is 30 yuan (US$4.9) for 210 megabytes and 60 yuan for 450 megabytes a quarter.

Users requiring only basic data services say this is too expensive and with more data capacity than they need.

“I already can’t use up my data capacity in a month and I’m not willing to pay more for a quarterly package,” said Chen Han, who pays China Mobile five yuan a month for a 30 megabytes data package.

China Unicom and China Telecom have also launched new quarterly packages.
