Number of jobless falls by 13,700
THE number of unemployed people in Shanghai fell by just 13,700 in the 12 months through June, despite the creation of 341,800 new jobs in the first half of this year, officials said yesterday.
About 222,500 people living in the city are currently without work, the Shanghai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau said.
Of the jobs created in the January to June period, 18 percent were filled by migrant workers, while 22 percent were taken by graduates, it said.
As of last week, 86 percent of the city’s 177,000 new graduates had secured employment, the bureau said.
Of the registered jobless, more than 20 percent are aged under 35, while 2.5 percent received unemployment benefits for the first time this year, it said.
Meanwhile, the city government in the first six months arranged 150 million yuan (US$24.1 million) worth of small-sum loans and agreed about 48 million yuan in rent subsidies for people setting up new businesses.
A total of 5,513 people established their own companies in the period, the bureau said.
As of April 1, the minimum wage for people working in Shanghai was increased by 200 yuan to 2,020 yuan a month, while the minimum hourly rate for part-time workers was raised by 1 yuan to 18 yuan.
