鈥楴urse鈥 held over death of patient
A WOMAN suspected of running an illegal medical practice in Songjiang District has been arrested following the death of a patient, prosecutors said yesterday.
The woman, surnamed Xie, is a nursing school graduate who moved to Shanghai last year from central China’s Hunan Province.
After failing to find a job, she and her husband decided to set up the clinic, from which she dispensed medical services and pharmaceuticals, Songjiang prosecutors said.
Xie is accused of giving a man surnamed Yu several intravenous injections when he visited her clinic on April 9 complaining of gout and a headache.
Soon after, Yu complained of feeling nauseous. Xie’s husband called an ambulance, but by the time it arrived, Yu was dead, prosecutors said.
A postmortem determined he had died of anaphylactic shock and respiratory failure.
Xie initially fled the scene, but handed herself in to police the next day, prosecutors said.
Under the law, anyone found guilty of running an illegal medical practice faces a prison term of 10 years or more.
The penalties are higher than those for manslaughter.
