Nursing home resident gets 3 1/2 years for setting fire
A MAN in his 60s was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for setting fire to a resident's bed as he slept in the nursing home where they both lived, court authorities said today.
The man surnamed Shi reportedly was angry about regulations imposed by a new director. He is a native of a village of Shanghai's Zhujiajiao Town and was housed in a nursing home several years ago when the local government decided to rebuild some dangerous buildings in the village and moved residents out.
Shi was upset when the new director decided to tighten regulations, such as bed times and alcohol prohibition. He broke the rules frequently and thought the director had purposely targeted him when forming them. He felt disgraced when found to be in violation.
One night last October, he went back to the building where he lived at 2 am after a night drinking, threw away the fire extinguisher and climbed into the room next to his. When he saw another man surnamed Hu was sleeping, he lit his bed with a disposable lighter.
Hu was rescued.
