Official makes pledge on safety
THE acting director of Huangpu District government yesterday promised to make public safety his top priority.
“We will spare no effort in safeguarding the people and property of Huangpu,” Tang Zhiping said while delivering the government’s work report to lawmakers at the annual legislative session.
The Huangpu government is responsible for the Bund area where 36 people were killed and 49 were injured on New Year’s Eve. The district’s former director Peng Song, Party secretary Zhou Wei and nine other officials were sacked in the aftermath of the incident.
Speaking about the tragedy, Tang said officials had demonstrated a total lack of awareness and had failed to assess the potential risks.
