Officials to tackle stinky dumps

AUTHORITIES in Minhang District said yesterday they are considering ways to deal with more than 20 foul-smelling waste dumps in the area after a surge in complaints from a local school.
A high school student told Shanghai Daily that he couldn’t eat his lunch because the stench made him nauseous, while another said he found it hard to concentrate because of the foul smell.
A teacher at the school said he filed a complaint after speaking to parents about the issue, many of whom fear the stench might contain toxic gases.
While students and teachers are leading the current campaign against the dumps — most of which are located on waste ground between the towns of Sanlin in the Pudong New Area and Pujiang in Minhang — locals said the problem has been around for five years, the Youth Daily reported.
A woman surnamed Xu was quoted as saying that she was forced to move away from the area as she could no longer stand the stench.
“I couldn’t open the door or windows of my room, and I often felt a pain in my chest,” she said.
While some of the refuse comes from nearby construction sites, a lot of it is kitchen waste, and it is that which creates the noxious odor, Xu said.
