Oil firm fined for polluting village soil
SHANGHAI Yuhong Oil Product Company was fined 150,000 yuan (US$22,340) for causing soil pollution in a village in Songjiang District that had forced some villagers to move out of the region.
According to Songjiang Environmental Protection Bureau, nauseous smells were emitted from reclaimed land in Songjiang’s Yexie Town three months ago.
Soil and underground water in the land, which covered an area of 1,500 square meters, were tested and found to be severely polluted. Seven of the worst affected families were moved to a hotel in a neighboring town.
The environment authority launched an investigation into the pollution source and enveloped the land with a massive plastic shed, gradually removing the polluted soil and water.
The investigation results were unveiled recently and showed that the oil products company, which is sited alongside the contaminated area of land, was responsible for the pollution.
According to the bureau, the company had violated several environmental regulations. The bureau issued a 150,000 yuan fine and warned a bigger fine would follow if the company continued to pollute.
The bureau is also seeking help from police to investigate if Shanghai Yuhong is involved in illegal dealing of dangerous wastes, as oil cans containing chemical wastes had been found buried deep in the land.
Currently the air around the area is clear and the environment authority said soil cleaning work would continue.
