On your marks for 2 new running events this May
TWO new running events will be held this year as the popularity of the sport in Shanghai continues to soar.
The races — an open-to-all 21-kilometer half marathon and a 12km run for women only — will be held on May 24 in the Pudong New Area of the city.
The former will be open to 3,500 runners and the latter to 1,500, organizers Shanghai East Best Lansheng Event Management said yesterday.
In a bid to give everyone an equal chance of competing, places in both events will be allocated via an online draw, rather than being awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, as is the case with the annual Shanghai International Marathon, the company said.
People will be able to register online from next Tuesday through April 25, with the draw taking place on April 27, it said.
The entrance fees are 160 yuan (US$26) for the half marathon and 100 yuan for the shorter run.
Both races will start at 6:30am from the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and finish at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center.
The top 200 runners in the half marathon will be guaranteed places in this year’s Shanghai International Marathon, while the fastest 200 in the women’s race will automatically qualify for the marathon’s 10km sister event, both of which are scheduled for November 8.
The use of a random draw is also expected to remove the problems experienced ahead of last year’s marathon event, when computer servers came under huge pressure as an estimated 1 million people applied for the 35,000 spots available.
All of the places were snapped up within hours of the registration opening.
