One-way system for Zigzag Bridge
A ONE-WAY pedestrian system is being introduced on the famous Zigzag Bridge at Yuyuan Garden over the holiday period.
It will be extended to streets in the Huangpu District tourist attraction if crowds get too big.
These restrictions will help ensure safety, the city government said yesterday.
This comes in the wake of the New year’s Eve Bund tragedy in which 36 revellers died in a crush.
A south-to-north pedestrian flow will be introduced today, New Year’s Eve, through to March 8.
Visitors will walk from the S-shaped passage south of the bridge onto the Zigzag Bridge itself.
When numbers reach 20,000 in the area, the one-way system will be extended. Pedestrians would travel along Yuyuanxin Road, Ninghui Road, the Central Square, the Zigzag Bridge Square and Yuyuan Old Street.
Admission will be halted if numbers approach 40,000.
Yuyuan Garden’s Lantern Festival display has been canceled this year due to safety concerns.
