Ordinary people honored for brave acts
CHEN Donghai stopped a knife-wielding man from hijacking a woman as she drove out of a shopping mall; Wang Yujun saved a 10-year-old girl from her burning home, suffering burns himself in the rescue.
They were among 22 people awarded for bravery yesterday by the city government. The two each received 10,000 yuan (US$1,475) and others, generally part of groups, received 5,000 yuan.
Chen was cut during a struggle when he stepped in to stop the man with the knife at the mall in Songjiang District in August last year. His help lead to the arrest of the man, who was later jailed for two years.
“I felt frightened after that,” he said yesterday. “But at that emergency moment, I only wanted to stop and catch that bad guy and I don’t regret anything about it.”
Wang was recognized for risking his own life to save the girl, whose parents were in hospital when their home caught fire due to faulty wiring. He said it was worth being injured to save the girl.
Among those who received 5,000 yuan were a family who saved a couple who nearly drowned in the Yangtze River after their boat capsized in May.
The city government has honored more than 1,744 heroes at since 1999 and more than 5,200 have been honored by town or district governments — ranging from 13 to 86 when they received their awards.
Chen Qizhong, the deputy director of the office of comprehensive management commission in Shanghai, thanked the heroes for their bravery and sense of justice.
And he encouraged the public to learn from them to make a contribution to the stability and development of the city.
