Outdoor play rare for local children

ONLY some 20 percent of local kindergarten students take part in sports and physical activities every day after school, recent research findings show.

This figure was contained in a report issued by the Next Generation Health & Growth Foundation and Zojirushi Shanghai Corporation. The report’s authors surveyed 2,000 children between three and six years of age at 30 kindergartens. The parents of these children were also polled.

Despite the lack of participation, over half of the children surveyed said they were “very interested” in sports and other outdoor activities. Only 3 percent of boys and 2.9 percent of girls said they were “completely uninterested,” data show. The remaining children claimed to be merely “interested” in such diversions.

Most of the children who participated in the poll said they typically rest at home after school. Specifically, only 23.6 percent of boys and 17.5 percent of girls said they take part in physical activity after classes on a daily basis.

Riding bicycles, using scooters and running were cited as the most popular varieties of physical recreation. Public parks and outdoor areas in residential compounds were named as the most common play venues.

Some 50 percent of surveyed parents said they prefer accompanying their children when playing outside due to concerns over safety as well as the desire to bond with their offspring.
