Outer Ring Road greenbelt gets under way with Baoshan opening

THE Fengxiang Road greenbelt in Baoshan District opened to the public yesterday, marking the start of the city’s 112-kilometer outer ring road “greenway” project.

The project, comprising cycle paths, jogging lanes and walkways, follows the route of the Outer Ring Road. It is scheduled to be finished by 2020.

The greenbelt has the appearance of a small wetland park. It features plants such as soapberries, plane trees and redwoods. They present an enchanting view with a mix of red, gold and yellow hues.

“We want to create a place for people to enjoy a moment of tranquility and leisure when they cycle, jog or take a stroll here,” said Wang Chongqing, deputy director of the Shanghai Public Green Space Construction Affairs Center.

Surveillance cameras provide security and there are benches and toilet facilities.

The Baoshan section of the greenway project extends 16.6 kilometers, and 14km have been completed. The section links the Zoumatang area with Jinqiu Road, and Zhongxin River to Hutai Road. The greenway would form a green closed cycle when the project is completed, Wang said.

It strings the Pudong New Area, and six districts — Baoshan, Jiading, Minhang, Xuhui, Changning and Putuo. Pudong is the longest of the sections, accounting for more than half of the total length.

Each district will feature a specialty plant along the greenway, like the renowned cherry blossom in Gucun Park in Baoshan and the azalea that is planted in Binjiang Forest Park in Pudong. Both will be planted along the greenway in Baoshan and Pudong.

Lining the various paths will be thousands of trees, plants and shrubs, while cafes, cycle-hire booths, toilets and information centers will cater to visitors. Some areas will be served by a Wi-Fi network.

A total of 38 service stations will line the greenway, said Wang. Some will incorporate bicycle rental spots, medical services, catering facilities and convenience stores, Wang said. The four biggest stations would be located near Gucun Park, Binjiang Forest Park, Minhang Culture Park and Shenjiang Road green area.

“Cyclists can ride bikes on the greenway to the metro stations as some sections are very close to metro stations, and the greenway also strings parks, museums and scenic spots, which is recommended for tourists,” Wang added.

The Outer Ring Road project is a highlight of the city’s overall greenway construction.

Shanghai plans to construct 1,000km of greenway by 2020. Currently about 200km have been completed so far.
