Over 70% locals own properties in the city

OVER 70 percent of Shanghai residents said they own homes in the city, according to a report released by the Shanghai Social Science Academy yesterday.

Of the 2,010 residents surveyed, 58.1 percent said they live in an apartment, while 13.1 percent said they live in government funded affordable houses.

The average home size for a typical three-member family in Shanghai was 71.04 square meters, the report said.

Despite the high home ownership rate, the surging prices of apartments are pushing residents with lower income out of the downtown area, the report said.

Over 33 percent of the surveyed, whose yearly income was less than 30,000 yuan (US$4,800), live in remote areas outside the G1501 Shanghai Ring Expressway, where only 6.5 percent of those with yearly income above 100,000 yuan choose to live in.

With jump in the living standard, more and more residents own cars and pets, resulting in increasing problems over parking and pet-related problems. Lack of parking space topped the list of grievances with 40.4 percent complaining about it in the survey. It was followed by pet nuisance (33.7%), cleaning work (31.1%), maintaining green areas (30.2%), group-oriented leasing (26.3%), security issues (25.7%) and property management service (20.9%).

Among the surveyed, those under 30 years of age, highlighted issues like green maintenance, cleanliness in public areas and security the most.

Those who were older than 60 years of age, 43.1 percent stressed about group leasing — twice that of young people.

Two percent of the interviewed said they had experienced elevator accidents.
