PPTV must pay for infringing copyright of Japanese TV series

PPTV was ordered to pay 25,000 yuan (US$3,967) for infringing the copyright of the popular Japanese science fiction TV series "Ultraman Diga" on its online video-sharing platform, the Pudong New Area People's Court said yesterday.
The plaintiff, Shanghai Character License Administrative Co (SCLA), said PPTV uploaded the TV series onto its website on January 26 last year without approval. The video site then screened the series, recommended on a popular animation billboard, to thousands of online viewers free of charge.
While asking PPTV to stop its infringing action, SCLA also demanded 1 million yuan compensation, saying the Ultraman series enjoyed a high reputation and popularity since it was first screened in China in 1996. SCLA claimed to own the copyright of the series and also an exclusive right to use the image of Ultraman, which was registered in China in 2006.
On June 24 last year, SCLA asked PPTV to delete the series from its website. PPTV agreed and deleted on the same day, the court heard. But PPTV refused to pay the big compensation claim and argued the TV series was not as influential as SCLA had boasted.
Yesterday's court ruling said that PPTV had illegally disseminated the TV series and ordered it to pay.
