Pair arrested for illegally selling used engine oil
A couple suspected of making nearly 120,000 yuan (US$18,000) by illegally processing and reselling about 60 tons of used engine oil were arrested for polluting the environment, Hongkou District prosecutors said yesterday.
They were caught this January at a site in Baoshan District. At the scene, investigators found nearly 32 tons of used engine oil, and the pair later admitted that they had sold 61 tons for 118,950 yuan over two months, prosecutors said.
The couple allegedly began to purchase used engine oil for 1,800 yuan per ton from car dealers in May 2015. They filtered the oil at their makeshift processing plant and resold it for about 1,950 yuan a ton, prosecutors said.
In China, a license is required to process used engine oil, which can cause soil and water contamination.
The pair, who failed to obtain a license, face up to seven years in jail if convicted.
