Pair arrested for terrorizing medics
TWO men said to have terrorized medical staff at Xinhua Hospital for the past three years have been arrested, police said yesterday.
The pair are alleged to have blocked the hospital entrance with their scooters and struck a doctor with an electric stun baton.
They are also said to have taken their campaign of intimidation to a staff residential complex, threatening medics and firing water pistols at them.
Violence against doctors and nurses is a growing problem in China’s hospitals, with a spate of sometimes fatal attacks prompting demands for better security for medics.
According to police, one of the men, surnamed Huang, is the father of a boy who suffered from a respiratory infection and was sent to Xinhua Hospital in 2011.
During the boy’s stay, Huang claimed that the hospital misdiagnosed his son’s condition, said police.
But he took his son home without making a complaint and paid his fees. The boy is reported to have recovered.
However, since then Huang, who police say is a drug addict, and a friend, surnamed Fu, are said to have terrorized staff and disrupted the running of the hospital on many occasions.
Officers said there was no misdiagnosis of his Huang’s son, but as he was born prematurely, he is weaker than peers.
Huang and Fu were held on May 7 and 15 respectively, said officers.
