Panda cub is a picture of health

THE first giant panda born in the city yesterday passed a medical examination with flying colors exactly one month after entering the world, according to Shanghai Wildlife Park.

The cub, who has come a long way since emerging from the womb as a fluffy pink ball, now weighs 1.497kg. She has grown black-and-white fur and now has the classic “panda eyes.”

She does not, however, have a name, and the park is seeking the public’s help in coming up with one. Its choice will be announced on September 9.

The cub, who has been breast fed since birth, never leaves the side of her mother, 20-year-old Guo Guo, said Cao Liang, deputy general manager of the park.

Her arms and legs are strong, and her healthy growth so far means that she may be ready to officially greet visitors before the National Day holiday in October, said Cao, but she may have some encounters with the public before that time.

“We need to monitor the situation because Guo Guo is very protective of her, and we need to make sure she is emotionally ready to allow her cub to meet people,” said Min Yingguo, director of the park’s Animal Management Department.

For those who just can’t wait to see the new cub, there is a video camera recording her every move, allowing visitors a peek into her world.

Lactating Guo Guo’s appetite has not fully recovered during her post-natal care, and it is not known when she will be ready to meet visitors again, the park operator said.

The park was established as a giant panda reserve by the State Forestry Administration of China in March. There are also reserves in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Guo Guo and another panda were transported to the park from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong in Sichuan Province.

The mother of Guo Guo is 38-year-old Jia Jia, who lives in Ocean Park Hong Kong and is the world’s oldest captive giant panda.

Guo Guo gave birth to twins called Ping Ping and An An in Sichuan in 2008.
