Parent help service ups age limit

THE city’s fertility assistance hotline said yesterday it has increased its upper age limit for free advice to 50, after receiving a glut of calls from older people planning for a child after losing their first.

The 65255555 service, run by the Shidai Foundation and a local maternity hospital, celebrated its first 100 days yesterday. It originally offered free advice only to women aged under 45.

However, after seeing that more than 90 percent of its 1,500 calls were from older people, the upper age limit was revised.

Hotline volunteer Liu Jiang said many of the calls came from couples that had lost their first child and were now at an advanced age.

More than 80 percent of callers reported having health problems, while others had suffered psychological traumas, Liu said.
