Parents ‘killed baby’

A COUPLE have been arrested on suspicion of murder after their abandoned newborn son was found dead near a creek, prosecutors in Songjiang District said yesterday.
According to prosecutors, the husband, surnamed Li, and his wife, surnamed Xiao, told police that they abandoned the baby as they believed he had syphilis contracted from his mother and they could not afford treatment.
Wrapped in a blanket, the child’s body was found in grass by a man fishing in a creek in Songjiang District on May 23.
Police established that the baby was delivered at a local maternal and child care service center.
A medic there told police that she delivered the baby on May 19, and that the mother was suffering from syphilis. And surveillance camera footage showed Li taking the child out of the hospital.
