Parents on alert over Nestle baby formula

A NESTLE baby formula product that has sickened infants in Australia can be purchased online in Shanghai and some parents and experts in the city are asking for an explanation from the company after finding one of its milk powder products sold in local supermarkets has almost identical ingredients.

More than 1,000 complaints have been made against Nestle NAN H.A. 1 Gold baby formula from parents in Australia after their babies suffered symptoms such as constant crying, rashes, dark green watery excrement, dehydration and vomiting since the product switched to a "new and improved" recipe.

It has not been pulled from store shelves in Australia.

On Taobao.com, an e-shop owner identified as "lizhihong1962" said the baby formula is available for purchase here.

There are a number of other e-shop venders selling NAN H.A. 1 Gold. After placing an order online, customers in Shanghai will receive it within a few days. It is priced between 200 yuan (US$32) and 260 yuan per can.

Nestle NAN H.A. 1 is sold in local supermarkets and has a very similar formula as NAN H.A. 1 Gold. Both products were produced in Germany, the Shanghai Evening Post reported.

The Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau has not taken any action yet.

He Tong, a public relations official with Nestle China, said Nestle NAN H.A. 1 and NAN H.A. 1 Gold sold in Australia belong to the same series, but stressed they have different formulas.

Wang Dingmian, director of the Guangdong Provincial Dairy Association, said the ingredients of baby formulas in the same series are basically the same, but there is a difference in trace elements.
