Park considers allowing dogs to visit every day
BINJIANG Forest Park in the Pudong New Area is considering opening its gates to dogs on a daily basis following the success of a recent trial scheme.
“Since April, we’ve allowed dog owners to bring their animals into the park on the last Saturday of the month, and it’s been very popular,” said park official Pei Haiying.
“We welcome lots of family groups into the park, and dogs are a part of many people’s families these days, so we want to be able to accommodate them,” she said.
Pei said the park conducted a poll prior to the launch of the trial and found that 85 percent of visitors said they had no objection to allowing in dogs, as long as their owners kept them in check.
“Before we opened the gates to the dogs many people would sneak the smaller ones in in their shopping bags, so we knew there was a big demand,” she said.
Since the launch of the trial, dogs have been allowed into a dedicated section of the park that has been cordoned off so as to minimize disruption to other visitors, Pei said.
“They have their own gate and the area set aside for them has plenty of room for them to run and play. There’s even room for the owners to put up tents if they want to,” she said.
While canines are not charged admission to the park — humans pay 20 yuan (US$3.20) — their owners are required to present their dog licenses at the gate, Pei said.
Though there are as yet no concrete plans to open the park to dogs on a daily basis the proposal has been discussed and is under consideration, the official said.
“On one Saturday we had about 200 dogs, so there’s no doubt the scheme is popular,” she said.
“And even then there were no problems. Most of our human visitors didn’t realize the dogs were there,” she said.
