Park to link water bodies
QINGPU District is planning to build a circular waterfront park around Dianshan Lake New Town, the district government said.
According to the district water authority, the park will link the new town’s four major water bodies — Dianpu Creek, Youdun Harbor, Xidayin Harbor and Shangda Creek — and green spaces to form a 21km ring for both aquatic and land activities such as jogging. Six wetland parks will be established at the mouths of the creeks.
“It will be a park for residents to enjoy recreational activities,” said Wang Weiwei, an official with the Qingpu District Water Authority. “Pocket parks — small parks accessible to the general public — are popular in the Western world. They are very close to residents and it only requires a small piece of land for them to be created.”
When the park is under construction, some persistent problems in these waterfront areas, such as unsightly urban villages, illegal structures and water pollution, will be dealt with comprehensively.
“A removal and relocation program is set to be launched in the urban villages so that these areas can make way for the park,” Wang said. “The two sides of the water will be developed as well, along with an improvement in water quality. And the surrounding environment will also be improved.”
The first phase of construction could begin in August, said officials.
