Part of tunnel work completed

WORK has been completed ahead of schedule on one of the tunnels in the Yan’an Road E. Tunnel, authorities announced over the weekend.
Traffic that had been traveling under the Huangpu River from Puxi to Pudong in the other tunnel will now be transferred to the renovated one.
And work will now begin on the other tunnel. Traffic traveling from Pudong to Puxi will still use diversions, said officials.
Work was not due to be completed until the end of the month.
The Yan’an Road E. Tunnel renovation program includes waterproofing, improved lighting, a new ventilation system and upgrading fire safety and surveillance systems, said officials.
Renovations should be completed at the end of the year, in the tunnel that usually carries 80,000 vehicles a day.
