Party time on famed Yongkang Road over
A BAR street popular with Shanghai’s expatriate community will soon be a thing of the past.
Bao Bingzhang, governor of Xuhui District, said most of the bars and restaurants on Yongkang Road will be shut down this month following complaints by residents about noise and traffic chaos.
“The bars along Yongkang Road must be removed, especially those near schools since the government never gave any permission to run bar business along the road,” Bao told Xinmin Evening News.
There are approximately 70 bars on the street since 2010.
Most of them operate along the 50-meter-long east section of the road. Some of the bar owners changed the structures of the three-story wooden residential buildings that were built over 70 years ago. Bao said the changes posed a danger to the old structures.
Some of bars even took over portions of the road, moving their tables outside and operated until late night.
Many senior citizens live upstairs.
In 2013, the street hit the headlines after some irate residents poured hot water on noisy customers below who were partying until late night.
The area was originally a wet market. The district government shut down the market in 2010 to improve the neighborhoods for residents. But that space was filled up by bars, Bao said.
“The bars play loud music till well after midnight. Drunk customers sing and dance on the road which is a nuisance,” a resident surnamed Ma said.
Another resident claimed that the wooden floors of her apartment shakes on the weekends when the bar on the ground floor turns up the volume of the speakers.
The residents also said that passing cars honked endlessly leading to frequent quarrels between drivers and customers who had parked themselves on the road.
A local resident claimed a company had leased over half of the ground-level apartments along the road from the residents and rented it to the bar owners around 2010.
The Tianping Subdistrict has asked an urban management company to ensure that the bars close by 10pm.
