Patrols stepped up to stop illegal hunting of birds

SHANGHAI forestry authority and police are joining forces to strengthen law enforcement against illegal hunting of migratory birds.
Located on the migrating route from Siberia to Australia, Shanghai is a major resting stop for aquatic birds such as waders and egrets.
More than a million migratory birds are estimated to call in at wetlands in Chongming and Baoshan districts, as well as the Pudong New Area during the months of October and November every year.
With the arrival of this year’s migratory season, Shanghai Forestry Bureau is sending patrol staff to the wetlands and seashore parks to try to prevent illegal hunting, which includes the use of nets and poisoning.
The bureau will seek help from police to inspect local markets and restaurants to deter illegal transporting and selling of protected species.
