Pay fines, or walk for a few days
TRAFFIC police are cracking down on drivers with multiple unsettled offenses — including sending SMS warnings and paying personal visits warning their cars could be taken off the road under a new law that takes effect on March 25.
Under the new law, drivers with five or more fines that have not been paid within 15 days will have cars taken off the road until the money is paid.
In Yangpu District, traffic police said there are 4,396 cars owned by individuals and 1,307 owned by companies that fall into this category. In Changning District, the numbers are 3,137 and 954.
Changning traffic police said the number of people coming in to pay fines has surged. Drivers can also pay over the Internet, including the police app Shanghai Jiaojing.
