Payout for boy’s brain damage

THE Huangpu District People’s Court has ordered a hospital to pay 455,000 yuan (US$67,000) compensation to relatives of a baby boy who suffered serious brain damage after he choked on his vomit while in hospital for thumb surgery.

Zhuo Yue was born in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, in June 2012 with two thumbs on his left hand. One thumb was removed in an operation at the Shanghai No. 9 People’s Hospital on December 13 that year, the court heard.

After the surgery, he was given intravenous antibiotics. But he vomited milk and began choking.

Although emergency treatment was carried out immediately, he suffered cerebral anoxia — a lack of oxygen to the brain — resulting in severe brain damage and epilepsy.
