Widow wins court case to gain access to late husband's bank accounts
A WIDOW who was told she was not entitled to withdraw money from her late husband’s bank accounts has won her court case to gain access to the funds, Qingpu District People’s Court said yesterday.
The woman, surnamed Wang, went to the bank, which was not identified, after finding two passbooks belonging to her husband — who died in 2006 — at her home. One of the accounts had a balance of US$3,000 and the other 75 yuan (US$12).
Although Wang presented her household registration book and husband’s death certificate to the teller, she was told she was not entitled to withdraw the money.
The person said that she would have to provide either a court ruling or notarized letter as evidence of her entitlement. Reluctant to pay a notary, Wang took the case to court.
The Qingpu court ruled in her favor and the bank was ordered to give her access to her late husband’s money.
