People smuggler given 7 years
A VISA agent has been sentenced to seven years and three months in prison for human smuggling after helping 13 people to enter Italy on fake documents, Jiading District People’s Court said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Zhou, and two accomplices earned about 1 million yuan (US$161,000) between December 2011 and September 2012 by helping customers to disguise themselves as businesspeople in order to get into the European country, the court said.
The “executives” each paid between 50,000 and 60,000 yuan for the service, which included the provision of invitation letters from foreign employers and other documents needed to apply for a work visa.
Zhou also taught his customers how to act like businesspeople so as to increase their chances of passing their visa interviews, prosecutors said.
They were also provided with a contact in Italy who helped them secure real jobs or assisted with their onward travel to other countries.
