Phones hit wrong note with pianist
CLASSICAL concertgoers are being asked to hand in their mobile phones before a performance by renowned pianist Krystian Zimerman later this month.
The Polish musician has insisted upon no unauthorized recordings of his performance at the Shanghai Symphony Hall on December 27.
This is reported to be the first time that this has been stipulated upon in an artist’s contract at the venue.
Audience members will be given plastic bags for their phones and asked to leave them at the cloakroom.
This is not compulsory, but cooperation from the audience will be highly appreciated, said Qian Jie of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
Concert hall staff will also enforce the ban during the performance, said officials.
Zimerman has insisted upon this ban in every performance contract since 2013.
Earlier, during a concert in Essen in Germany, he was incensed at someone recording the performance and walked off stage. Although he returned, he refused to play an encore.
A video of the performance was later uploaded onto YouTube.
Bad behavior from audience members has disrupted Shanghai classical concerts in the past.
German violinist Anne Sophie Mutter asked a man to leave during her performance in 2006 as the red light on his camera was disturbing her concentration.
Last month, audience members complained that a man who kept looking at his tablet computer during a recital by pianist Zhu Xiaomei was distracting them.
According to an online poll held by the Shanghai Symphony Hall recently, persistent whispering is the most annoying concertgoer bad behavior, getting 532 votes.
This was followed by rustling bags‚ arriving late or leaving early, recording performances, eating and drinking and applauding at inappropriate times.
