Pile-up averted after 鈥榮ugar put in tank鈥
A woman’s “boyfriend” is reported to have confessed to putting sugar in her gas tank after rowing with her. His action, in turn, led to a road having to be closed to traffic.
Wang Kun’s action, caused her car to stall and a pile-up was narrowly avoided, said prosecutors in Songjiang District.
The incident happened on September 10 when Lin Hui was in her car, driven by an employee at a speed of up to 90 kilometers per hour near the Outer Ring Elevated Road. The car stalled without any warning, prosecutors said.
The driver found the wheel had become stiff and the vehicle was hard to turn. Using his initiative, he managed to park the car on a lane that had been closed for maintenance, narrowly averting a pile-up. Prosecutors added that Lin called police and road assistance.
A car repair technician found sucrose near the mouth of the gas tank, which had gummed up the engine.
Police checked monitoring cameras and videos showed a man had opened her car’s gas tank and poured something into it on September 3, prosecutors said.
Wang was taken in for questioning and claimed he was Lin’s boyfriend, which was why he had her car key, and he confessed to having poured sugar into her car as they had broken up, according to prosecutors.
He was arrested for destroying a vehicle, they added.
