Pipeline damage cuts gas to residential area

A NATURAL gas pipeline on Jujiaqiao Road near Pudong Avenue was accidentally damaged by a construction crew at about 7:55am this morning, authorities said.
No injuries were reported, but the gas supply to a nearby residential complex was cut off.
A strong smell of gas was noticeable in the area on Jujiaoqiao Road according to Xinmin.cn. The pipe was 4 or 5 meters underground.
A renovation project was in progress there. The responsible company said their staff immediately used water in an attempt to reduce the effects of the rupture after they broke the pipe.
A stream of white mist or smoke erupted as high as 20 meters from the pipeline after a huge bang, according to a witness in a nearby shop.
Staff from gas company quickly shut the valve as traffic police guided motorists around the area.
The broken pipe is still undergoing emergency repairs.
