Plan for charity tombs

LOCAL cemeteries have begun to promote "charity-tombs" this year for needy people.

A single tomb, no more than 0.3 square meters, will cost at most 1,000 yuan (US$143); and a double one, under 0.5 square meters, no more than 2,000 yuan, said the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.

Several groups will qualify, such as people who lived below the city's poverty line and soldiers, officials said.

Almost 250 charity tombs have been established at the Binhaiguyuan Cemetery in Fengxian District and such tombs will be introduced in 22 cemeteries in the city.

Meanwhile, the price of commercial graves is rising.

They cost from 20,000 to 30,000 yuan per square meter and are expected to rise.

Some ornately decorated graves can cost around 50,000 yuan a square meter.
