Plan to clean up heavily polluted bay
SHANGHAI Ocean Bureau will take action to improve the water quality and ecological environment of Hangzhou Bay.
The 2015 China sea environment report showed that the water quality in Hangzhou Bay is below Level 4, the lowest level of sea water quality in the national standard. The bay also has a poor ecological environment, said the report.
According to Xu Jiancheng, director of Shanghai Ocean Bureau’s sea environment protection division, the region receives some 9 million pollutants from the Yangtze River and the Qiantang River every year. Xu said the bureau is working on a cleanup plan for the districts close to the Hangzhou Bay, aiming to improve the water quality of the region governed by Shanghai. The plan could be activated as soon as the second half of the year.
According to the bureau’s plan, a shelter forest will be developed along the coast in the Pudong New Area and an ocean park and wetland will be created in the districts of Jinshan and Fengxian.
Xu said Shanghai will also strengthen its control over waste discharge from the sewage plants along Hangzhou Bay, and increase the variety of sea creatures in the region to improve the ecological balance.
