Plan to double health care beds for the elderly
SHANGHAI aims to have 1.5 medical care beds for every 100 elderly residents — more than double the current 0.6 — by 2020 to tackle the challenges of an aging society.
The target is part of a five-year blueprint announced by authorities yesterday.
Half the beds will be in medical facilities and the rest will be in aged care institutions.
By 2020, more than 5.4 million people, or 36 percent of residents, will be over 60 years old.
And that proportion is expected to increase.
Parents with one child under the one child policy will account for most of the aged population, and the number of elderly living alone will increase.
The Shanghai Commission of Health and Family Planning said the number of seniors who cannot take care of themselves is rising due to disease and disability, which poses a major challenge to the health care system and resources.
Authorities want to build a health care system that can meet basic medical and nursing needs.
Comprehensive hospitals with 101 to 500 beds, and new community health centers, are required to allocate at least 50 beds for seniors.
Cooperation and information sharing with international experts and institutions will be beefed up.
Aged homes with more than 150 beds will be required to provide basic medical care under the plan.
